DOPE EDDM

Stop guessing which streets to mail.

And stop hauling it to the post office yourself.

Every Door Direct Mail is the cheapest way to reach a whole neighborhood. It's also the easiest thing in marketing to get wrong, because most people pick a zip code off a map and hope. Then they spend a Saturday bundling cards and standing in line. We do the targeting and the delivery. You go run your business.

Training is FREE, about 20 minutes, twice a day. Or skip it, no card required to open an account.

why it's hard

Nobody tells you what "do it yourself" actually means.

EDDM gets sold as the easy, cheap option. Then the box of postcards shows up at your shop and you find out the mailing part was never included. Here's the day you just signed up for.

One EDDM drop, three routes, done the hard way:

  • FIRST -  Open the USPS mapping tool and try to work out which carrier routes you want. Squint at percentages and averages that describe a whole zip code, not a street. Pick something. Hope.

  • THEN - Order the cards. Wait. A pallet of postcards arrives at your shop and now they're your problem.

  • THEN - Count them into bundles of 50 or 100 with rubber bands. Not roughly β€” exactly, the way USPS requires, or it gets rejected at the counter.

  • THEN - Fill out a facing slip and postal paperwork for every single route. Get a form wrong and you're driving back.

  • THEN - Load the truck. Drive to the destination post office for route one. Stand in line. Do it again for route two, in a different town. Then route three.

  • FINALLY - Find out three weeks later that the routes you guessed at were half apartments, and start over next month.

That's a full day of an owner's time, on top of the printing bill. The targeting was still a coin flip.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps in under a minute.

#01

Draw Your Area

Drop a radius or draw a custom shape around any neighborhood, subdivision, or service area. See your total home count instantly.

#02

Add Permit Filters

Pick from about 30 permit types. Choose HAS or HAS NOT, then set your time window. Watch your list narrow in real time.

#03

Mail It

Send straight from the platform. Design it yourself in Design Studio, or set it as an automation that runs without you.

the bigger problem

The logistics are annoying. The guessing is what costs you money.

Every EDDM tool ever built starts the same way: pick a zip code. So that's what people do. They pick the zip they live in, or the one that sounds nice, and mail the whole thing.

But a zip code is a postal filing system. It isn't a description of who lives there. One zip can hold a street of $800,000 homes on half-acre lots and a block of apartment buildings two miles away, and the average you're shown papers over both. You mail 5,000 pieces, half of them land somewhere they were never going to work, and you conclude that direct mail doesn't work.

It did work. You just aimed it at the wrong streets, and nothing in the process was ever going to tell you.

The one term worth knowing:

A "carrier route" is one mail carrier's daily loop.

Usually 400 to 800 addresses, it's the houses one person delivers to in a day. It's a real, physical stretch of streets, and it's the actual unit EDDM is sold in. Not a zip code. Not a city. One carrier's walk. Get specific at that level and everything changes.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Look at the top two. Neither one is in the zip code this contractor works out of.

If he'd picked his own zip (which is all any other tool lets you do),  he'd have mailed his third-best option and never known the other two existed.

Note: Illustrative example only.  Your results depend on your area and what you're looking for.

The card itself

EDDM cards are big on purpose.

USPS sets minimum dimensions for EDDM, which is quietly good news! The smallest EDDM card is still bigger than the 4x6 postcards most companies mail. Yours will be the biggest thing in the mailbox that day.

Build the card in our Design Studio or upload artwork you already have. We check the postage area and bleed before anything prints, so you don't find out about a layout problem after 5,000 copies.

straight talk

What EDDM won't do.

Worth knowing before your first drop:

πŸ”΄ You're mailing everybody on that route. Our ranking tells you which routes hold the most homes like the ones you want, but it can't remove the others. If you need specific households only, that's targeted mail, and we'll tell you so.

πŸ”΄ It's a brand play as much as a lead play. Saturation works by repetition. One drop into a new neighborhood rarely lights up the phone. Three drops over a season is how people actually win with this.

πŸ”΄ Give it time to land. Figure 5 to 8 days from the drop, sometimes longer. If you're expecting calls the next morning you'll talk yourself out of a campaign that was working.

πŸ”΄ Track it properly. Use a dedicated phone number or a QR code, and expect scan rates to run low even on good campaigns. The real measure is jobs booked in those neighborhoods, not scans.
